By becoming a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), you’ll be part of one of the fastest growing careers and will have the recognized credentials healthcare employers are searching for now.

Medical Administrative Assistant you’ll work on the front line of the health care field; ensuring that offices are well run and in compliance with expected practices.

You will complete administrative activities in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Duties will vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice.

Administrative activities may include some (or all) the following:

  • Filling out insurance forms and coding patients’ medical information
  • Answering telephones
  • Scheduling patient appointments,
  • Recording medical histories and documentation.

 

Career Outlook

Medical admin assistants held about 634,400 jobs in 2016, and the largest employers were:

  • Offices of physicians 57%
  • Hospitals; state, local, and private 15%
  • Outpatient care centers 9%
  • Offices of chiropractors 4%

Most medical assistants work full time. Some work evenings, weekends, or holidays to cover shifts in medical facilities that are always open.

 

Salary

The median annual wage (the midpoint) for medical assistants in 2017 was $32,480. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $23,830, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $45,900.

In May 2017, the median annual wages for medical admin assistants were as follows:

  • Outpatient care centers $33,820
  • Hospitals; state, local, and private $33,590
  • Offices of physicians $32,710
  • Offices of chiropractors $29,010

 

Medical Administration Career Path and Earning Potential

Careers in medical administration are available at all levels of responsibility, and offer plenty of opportunity for advancement. An employee might start out as a medical receptionist, be promoted to assistant medical office manager, and with further experience, become a full medical office manager in charge of administrative duties for a doctor’s office or medical complex.
