Fresh off the heels of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday shopping comes another day that is fast becoming a post-Thanksgiving tradition: #GivingTuesday.
Started by the 92nd Street Y in 2011, #GivingTuesday encourages people to celebrate the holiday by giving back and helping others by supporting nonprofits working to build stronger communities.
Goodwill of Greater Washington will be participating in this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign on Tuesday, November 28 to raise funds toward our mission programs. Every year, Goodwill serves more than 2,000 people with disabilities and disadvantages across our region.
While our mission services are offered at no cost to participants, Goodwill invests an average of $5,500 in each student who enrolls in our job-training programs. So far this year, more than 257 people have enrolled in our Hospitality, Security, and Energy and Utilities programs.
Revenue from our retail and contracts divisions covers the administrative costs of our workforce training programs. But almost 78% of the direct program costs come from the generous contributions of individuals, foundations and corporations who invest in our mission. Without that support, we would not be able to offer our programs to those who need us most.
When you give to Goodwill, you change the lives of entire families. The training and support people receive at Goodwill not only allows them to start new careers, but also to fulfill their dream of a better future for their loved ones.
So as you prepare to celebrate and spend the holiday season with family and friends, we hope you will remember the individuals and families served by Goodwill. Please make a gift today and transform a life this holiday season.
