Life is often about victories. Large or small it is the individual’s success that bring us hope and motivate us to do more.  At this time of year, we take a moment to pause and reflect on the many success stories we have witnessed. These are large life victories fueled by motivation, desire and hard work. Thanks to our partners at the Marriott Marquis – Washington, DC, Events DC, OneDC, OMG Center for Collaborative Learning, Progressive Partners, the United Way of the National Capital Area, Grow, LLC, the University of the District of Columbia Community College, hundreds of DC residents have been able to spike the football in 2014.  Here are just a few:

  • Eric grew up in Southeast DC and made some questionable choices that led to his incarceration. As he struggled as a returning citizen he was accepted into the Washington Marriott Marquis Job Training Program. He recently celebrated his six-month anniversary as an Engineer at Marriott and earns $25/hour. As he moves forward with his life he is taking the next step towards becoming a home owner.
  • DeQuan   is a native of Washington D.C who successfully completed the Marriott Marquis training. While in the program he was enrolled in school fulltime at UDC, with plans to complete his degree in Construction Management and transfer to North Carolina A & T.  However, his plans have now changed after being hired at the Marriott Marquis as a part of the Banquet set up team. Since being employed, he has continued school full-time, obtained his passport, is working on obtaining his driver’s license, and will purchase a car in the near future. He is considered a Rising Star by Marriott, and has achieved this recognition by his employer while maintaining an overall grade point average of a 3.8.  His plans are now to continue school majoring in  Engineering as he continues to grow with the Marriott family. DeQuan is an example of hard work and dedication in its finest.
  • Bri’Aryn  came to Goodwill in search of a better employment opportunity and enrolled into the Washington Marriott Marquis Jobs Training program. While in the training program, Bri’Aryn never missed a day and often shared her aspirations of being a manager within a hotel. Bri’Aryn  was hired by the Marriott Marquis as a Housekeeper and quickly became a go-to employee by the housekeeping managers. After only six short months, Bri’Aryn has been promoted to Shift Lead and has entered the hotel’s Management-In- Training program.
  • Kevin  participated in one of the first classes of the Washington Marriott Marquis job training program and was very excited about the opportunity. Kevin shared some of his hardships dealing with life, family, and employment but was very adamant about completing this training and while continuing his education. After finishing the training, Kevin was offered a full time Banquet Server position but still dedicated time and effort to attend an adult education program in the evening. After six months of hard work and determination, Kevin is not only doing an excellent job at the Marriott Marquis, but he has graduated and will be attending UDC Community College in the spring of 2015.

These are just a handful of the many victories our graduates achieved in the last year thanks to you and our generous corporate and community partners.

Every time you donate to Goodwill, every time you shop at a Goodwill store you contribute to these victories.

Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday season!
