Everyone wants to start at the top, be the head honcho, the big cheese. Unfortunately, the reality is that unless you create your own business you will have to start at (or near) the bottom and work your way up. This is especially true for those that lack real-world work experiences like recent college grads and those switching fields.
Starting at the beginning is not a bad thing as every journey must begin somewhere. However, there is a small consideration of consideration. What will you earn as you work your way to the top?
If you search “entry-level positions that pay well” you’ll find a host of opportunities. Many of them – like, for example, Patent Attorneys – require highly specialized training and education. There are many listings for a variety of engineering professions but that likely won’t be a real opportunity for someone with a liberal arts degree.
All is not lost. There are some more, for lack of a better term, generic fields of opportunity available to the novice that also pays well. Here are eight professions with a median salary according to Glassdoor.com:
The real prerequisite for this is that you have a creative spark. And, know Photoshop very well. Still, the median starting salary for this position is $45,500.
This is usually found within the corporate structure of banks, insurance companies, and investment houses – to name a few. If you like numbers and are good at analyzing them this could be a great place to begin building a career. Starting salary is around $62,277.
Customer Service Representative
Do you have good people skills? Communicate well? Like to help others? Does this sound like a sales pitch? In our increasingly automated world, Customer Service Representatives are often the point of contact between the customer and the company. This is a wide field but the opportunities are large. The median starting salary is $54,177.
See the previous paragraph but add one element – can you close? Sales Representatives need to be able to not take rejection personally but can quickly expand their potential. This is especially fertile ground in the B2B space. Starting median salary is $46,800.
If you can code or have specialized knowledge in networking systems, databases, applications, etc. this is where you will start. Unless, of course, you’re the next Steve Jobs. Starting median salary is $86,391.
Many entry-level positions are marked with the words “Associate”, Assistant” or “Coordinator”. This is a good way to get your foot in the door of a particular field – like marketing. It is a great way to learn and grow. This position can expect to start at around $48,571.
This can include areas like contract management, database development and maintenance, managing corporate tax filings and conducting legal research. Starting median salary is $47,787.
This is an administrative support position in the Human Resources Department. If HR is your dream this is the best place to start. And, you can expect a median salary of $45,860.
