Goodwill Helps Hosea Overcome Addictions and Learn Responsibility!
Alcohol and drug abuse are two of most dangerous and common addictions people struggle with throughout the world. Not everyone overcomes or even survives these addictions, especially if they have a long history of abuse. That’s why the story of Hosea is one of survival and pride, with the help of Goodwill.
Hosea came to Goodwill in 2002 after suffering through years of alcohol and substance abuse. Before coming to Goodwill, he began to believe that he had no future and no hope of improving the quality of his life.
Finally, Hosea completed a rigid substance abuse rehabilitation program and realized that there was more to life than getting high. But now he needed to take the next steps to personal success which consisted of setting new goals in life, finding employment and becoming self-sufficient. He knew he still had a long way to go!
After finding Goodwill, Hosea worked hard and completed one of the non-profit agency’s job training programs where he not only learned a trade, but also how to better deal with life’s difficulties.
Today Hosea works at a local military facility, where is a model employee and a shining example of how Goodwill can help turn a life around.
Originally from South Carolina, Hosea now lives in the District of Columbia where he cares for his only child and his elderly mother. He says he’s very grateful for his health, stability and the family support he receives. He is also very proud of the man he has become and the success Goodwill has helped him achieve.
Like many in his position, Hosea regrets his past mistakes, but he’s happy he came to Goodwill because, as he puts it, “I regained my spirit to live…they gave me a big chance to make my life better”. Hosea says he owes his success to the valuable lessons that Goodwill taught him, which he summarizes in one word: “Responsibility”.
It is because of the work that you do everyday that people like Hosea have new hope in life. Thank you for your commitment to Goodwill’s mission and to helping improve the quality of life for others in our community.
