Andrea Discovers A New Career Path Through Goodwill
Growing up on the streets of Philadelphia is not one of the fondest memories for Andrea. Like many disadvantaged members of our population, she was surrounded by poverty and discontent. Forced into a life where she was deprived of any luxuries or the basic comforts available to most children, Andrea found herself wrestling with financial struggles that are still a factor in her life today.
After moving to Washington, DC and becoming the mother to six children, Andrea’s responsibilities and burdens seemed to weigh even heavier on her shoulders. She wanted the best for her kids, but found it difficult to keep her head above water on the little she was earning.
However, Andrea’s eagerness to improve her life led her to Goodwill of Greater Washington, where she enrolled in Goodwill’s Female Construction Training Program. Despite being faced with numerous challenges and distractions, Andrea managed to become the top student in her class! And thanks to Goodwill, Andrea has now discovered a new career path in commercial construction and a future filled with independence, hope and dignity!
Andrea believes in being a productive member of society, and wants to set a good example for her children. She believes strongly in the importance of an education and believes that “...you need a degree in order to get a good position”. She hopes that as a result of the training she received at Goodwill, she’ll not only be able to send her kids to college, but perhaps earn enough money to go back to school and earn a degree herself.
Andrea dreams of opening her own business one day. With her desire and the help she received from Goodwill, we believe her dream will come true!
