Holly Fischer had been working at a local daycare for over twelve years. She loved her job, but over time, the work environment began to change. She began to feel that her learning disability was becoming a barrier to career advancement. Eventually, she decided to get a fresh start with a new employer: Goodwill! View the video...
“I expect to pass through this life but once. If, therefore, there can be any kindness I can show or any good thing I can do for any fellow being, let me do it now….as I shall not pass this way again.”
As the holiday season approaches there begins to be a feeling of giving and kindness in the air! On behalf of the Goodwill associates and the people we serve, I want to thank you for being so generous to us throughout the year. You have touched the lives of 650 Goodwill associates and helped our team serve close to 3000 people in our community during 2011.
These two simple words – Thank You – are never said enough and yet please know that they are expressed daily within our Goodwill towards our valued donors. Wishing you a blessed and happy holiday season!
-Catherine Meloy, GGW President & CEO

Share a Smile with Goodwill & Washington Gas was a Big Success!
A BIG thank you goes to our Goodwill shoppers and our campaign sponsor Washington Gas for helping Goodwill raise over $11,000 through our Share a Smile campaign during the month of October.
In addition to funding Goodwill’s job training programs, the campaign also helped raise awareness for National Disability Employee Awareness Month, which emphasizes the importance and value of employing people with disabilities. To learn more visit the National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month website.
Goodwill of Greater Washington is very excited to announce our new partnership with Recoup, the first online marketplace connecting people with the brands they like and the causes they care about, like Goodwill.
Buy what you like. Save what you want. Support what you love.
Here's how it works.
Sign up for Recoup to receive special deals from local and national merchants. If we can reach 100 supporters on Recoup by the end of the year, Recoup will DOUBLE donations to us!
Buy what you like. Purchase a great promotion from local or national stores at a heavily discounted price.
Recoup automatically donates a percentage of your purchase to Goodwill, but you can also choose to increase that donation by converting more of your savings to a tax-deductible donation.
The holidays are fast-approaching, and we hope you'll take advantage of the deals at Recoup when fulfilling your holiday gift needs. It's an effortless way to help our community.
Give to the Max Day Results!
The final results of the Give to the Max Day campaign are in! In just 24 hours, we received 28 donations and raised $6,655 to support Goodwill’s mission of training and employing people with disabilities and disadvantages!
In efforts to raise support for Goodwill, our Senior Development Officer, Stephen Kopalchick challenged us to raise $5,000. If we did, then he would walk the streets of DC in our smiling “g” costume. See the Give to the Max Day, Goodwill Challenge and stay tuned for details on his walk.
This was by far the most successful online fundraising campaign we’ve ever had. Thank you to all who showed their support and a special thank you to our corporate sponsor AMSAN Eagle Maintenance for making this happen!
Remember, stay tuned on the smiling “g” walk. You’ll find out about it first on Facebook!
Five weeks ago, eight men and two women walked into Goodwill’s Arlington Campus to start their first day of the new Goodwill-NOVA Security Training program. On November 18th, all 10 of them walked out of the program’s graduation event with a certificate of completion, a security guard license, CPR/First Aid Card, and with most also earning five NOVA college credits towards a credential.
Even better than completion is that Allied Barton Security Firm has offered to hire all 10 graduates! This is a tremendous success story for Goodwill, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and especially these hard working and dedicated graduates! The 2012 holiday season will be one for celebration in these 10 households.
Interested applicants for future programs can contact Goodwill at (703) 769-3714 or visit www.dcgoodwill.org.
