“Character is doing what’s right when nobody is looking.”
J.C. Watts, Jr.
This quote was sent out to the 680 employees of Goodwill of Greater Washington in our monthly newsletter. In our Standards of Excellence we continually work towards serving both our external customers, as well as the people we work side by side with each day. Your support gives us the continued incentive to strive to create a “service value” environment for our employees and the people in the community we serve. This environment gives us the desire that we are always “doing what’s right when nobody is looking”….and this is our promise to you, our valued supporters.

Goodwill Becomes ‘A part of History’
Through the professional behavior and work ethic of the students from the P.A.R.T. construction class and the Environmental Services class we have become, along with our students, a part history.
We have just completed another Sherwin Williams paint class at the historical landmark, “The National Council of Negro Women” (NCNW) that consisted of students strictly from the Goodwill training classes. Our students not only represented themselves with the utmost dignity, but were shining lights brightly illuminating Goodwill for the opportunities that have arisen as a result of the services we provide. They were recognized for their accomplishment and received their certificates on Friday, May the 11th.
Bill Allman, the Sherwin Williams facilitator, once again stated how respectful our students are and how prepared and aware of what is required of them to make the next step in the journey of success. He consistently praised them for their attention to detail and how well they followed instruction. He attributed this to their grasp of the “Life Skills” they had acquired from their training here at Goodwill.

Congress Approves Minimum Wage Increase
On Thursday, May 24th, both the House and Senate approved, H.R. 2206, the war funding bill. This bill includes an increase in the federal minimum wage from the current level of $5.15 to $7.25 per hour. The increase is phased in over a two-year period in three increments of 70 cents each. This increase takes effect 60 days after enactment, from $5.15 to $5.85 per hour. One year after the first increase, it goes up to $6.55 per hour, and to $7.25 per hour the year after.
The bill has been sent to the President for his signature, and he is expected to sign it into law.

Goodwill Employee Finds $5,000 in Donated Pajamas!
The Associated Press, May 25, 2007
GREENVILLE, S.C. – According to a story by the Associated Press on MSNBC.com , a Goodwill Industries worker who turned in more than $5,000 she found in donated pajama pants will get to keep the money because the owner could not be found.
Kelli Owens, a 21 year old single mother of three, was sorting donated clothes as part of her training at Goodwill earlier this month when she found the money. She took it straight to her supervisor.
“She will get to keep the money,” Goodwill spokeswoman Crystal Hardesty said Friday. “It’s being invested into a scholarship fund.”
“I just want everybody to be proud of me” said Owens, who plans to go to Greenville Technical College to pursue a career in law enforcement. “I couldn’t keep it because it belonged to somebody else, you know. I couldn’t live with myself knowing that.”
The money was in an envelope with a note naming the intended recipient. The giver wrote that he or she hoped the money would be spent wisely.
Goodwill officials talked to more than 30 people, but none could give the right description, the name on the letter or where the donation was dropped off.
“We feel like we vetted it very well,” Hardesty said. “The story got a lot of publicity.”
