Dear Supporter,

"Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting."

-- Elizabeth Bibesco

As we approach the end of the year and enjoy the wonders of the Thanksgiving and Holiday seasons, I want to thank each of you for giving to Goodwill of Greater Washington over the past year. While you may not remember all of the many ways you have touched the lives of the people we serve, from your clothing donations to your financail support...we will never forget the support you have given us.

Thank you for being a part of our organization and for the gifts of generosity you continue to give to us throughout the year to better serve the lives of people who are disadvantaged or disabled within our community.

Goodwill Hosts Alumni Dinners

Through a grant from Capital One Foundation, Goodwill's Arlington Career Campus hosted its second quarterly Alumni Club Dinner at its 10 South Glebe Road location. 23 recent alumni and current students attended the September 20th fete. The new students are invited to meet the alumni and hear about their jobs and how they got to where they are. The alumni also get a chance to reconnect with their class and network with previous classes. A guest speaker is invited to talk about a professional development topic.

The September dinner focused on financial freedom, with presentation by Adriane Price Melvin from Ameriprise. The first dinner featured Evelyn Kaiser with Virginia Rehabilitative Services discussing how to organize business cards using Microsoft Outlook. Goodwill’s next event will be December 13 and will be a holiday dinner, without a speaker. “We've found that these dinners really help us build community at the Arlington Career Campus and it reminds students that we are here as a support to them, even after they graduate”, said Brandi Yee, the Arlington Career Campus Site Manager.

If you’re interested in attending an alumni dinner and learning more about Goodwill’s programs, please contact Goodwill’s training and employment division at 202-636-4225.

Thank You for Supporting National Disability Employment Awareness Month

This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month."

Since 2001, the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) in the U.S. Department of Labor has been responsible for planning NDEAM activities and materials to increase the public's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed. ODEP provides information online that can to be used for National Disability Employment Awareness Month, as well as other educational programs throughout the year on its Publications webpage.

Please support Goodwill’s efforts to train and find employment for people with disabilities or disadvantages by making a cash contribution today.
