Letter to Goodwill

September 18, 2006

Ms. Catherine Meloy
President & CEO
Goodwill of Greater Washington
2200 South Dakota Avenue, NE
Washington, DC 20018

Dear Ms. Meloy:

This letter is being written to express my thanks and appreciation for the competent and courteous manner demonstrated by Ms. Sandra Jones; and her representatives whenever I call the Human Resources Office.

Ms. Jones was very helpful to me in keeping a record of my son’s leave last year when there was a glitch in the computer software that caused his leave to be in error. Recently, she exhibited the same manner of helpfulness in answering questions on carryover leave balance for my son.

Many thanks to Ms. Jones, and also to you for your caring spirit for the less fortunate that you have shown in so many tangible ways.

Sincerely,

Ruthelle Stafford
(Michael D, Stafford)

Dear Supporter,

“Man must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind him to the fact that each moment of your life is a miracle and a mystery”

-- H.G. Wells

As the pages of the calendar are swiftly turning, your support for Goodwill of Greater Washington helps change the lives of the people we serve. Each day of the year the Goodwill of Greater Washington team will value your investment of time, money and donations. Daily we realize that without you, our valued donors, the “miracle and mystery of life” would never be felt by the disadvantaged and disabled within our greater Washington community. Thank you!

Goodwill offers discount on books to local teachers

In an effort to help teachers provide access to books that some of their student’s may not be able to afford, the Goodwill Retail Store in Sterling, VA will be offering a 10% discount on all books to local teachers and educators. “Goodwill’s mission is to educate, train, employ or place people with disadvantages or disabilities”, said Brendan Hurley, Goodwill VP of Marketing & Communications.

“The manager of our retail store in Sterling understands this and wanted to help the teachers in his community in their efforts to educate and train as well.” If the program proves successful, Goodwill may enhance the program market wide.

Any teacher can receive the discount at the Sterling, VA Goodwill Retail Store just by showing a valid teacher ID. The discount program will continue through the end of 2006.

Goodwill Needs Your Donations This Holiday Season!

In 2005, the world responded to several major natural disasters: Hurricane’s Katrina and Rita and the Tsunami that devastated parts of Thailand, Indonesia and other areas of Southeast Asia.

Americans were as always, extremely generous in their efforts to assist those whose lives were destroyed by these tragic acts of nature. They provided each of us with a sense of purpose, a mission and a drive to help in whatever way we could.

Fortunately, there have been no huge natural disasters recently, but the sense of urgency to help others in need this holiday season should be just as critical as it was last year! Many of the people Goodwill serves do not have the means to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for their families or gifts for their children because they don’t have the skills necessary to find sustainable employment. They eat at soup kitchens because they don’t have the money to buy food. They live in shelters because they can’t afford to pay rent. They allow injuries to go untreated because they can’t afford health care. Your donations can help change all of that. With a job, these disadvantaged and disabled members of our community can afford to put food on the table. They can secure insurance through work. And they can find a place to call “home”. Goodwill needs your help now more than ever. Please give to Goodwill today. Your gift will make a lasting impact on someone else’s life…forever! Please click here to make a charitable contribution. Thank you!

Goodwill Construction Training Program Highlighted in Two Part Series in the Afro American Newspaper

Afro American Newspaper journalist Valencia Mohammad recently completed a two part series on Goodwill’s construction pre-apprenticeship training program. The training program is designed to provide disadvantaged, unemployed or underemployed members of our community the skills they need to find careers in a booming local industry. The programs, supported by NCRC and the Washington Area Women’s Foundation have proven to be highly successful and Goodwill is looking to replicate the program as soon as possible. Update on Pension Protection Act of 2006

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides that in 2006 and 2007, a person over age 70½ can make charitable gifts from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) of up to $100,000 per year. The donor will benefit by not having to report the IRA distribution as taxable income, although the donor will not be able to claim a charitable income tax deduction for the gift. Goodwill Works with Safeway & the Salvation Army to Provide Community Services and Hot Meals at Thanksgiving

The day long event gave a hot turkey dinner to those members of the Washington, DC community who don’t have the means to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for themselves and their families. In addition to the meal, the 5,000 guests were also treated to a free community service and career fair managed by Goodwill and Workforce Organizations for Regional Collaboration. The fair included other social service providers, job skill workshops and free health screenings. Hundreds of volunteers helped make this year’s Feast of Sharing the best yet. Other partners included The Washington DC Convention Center, Centerplate, Metropolitan Baptist Church, Suntrust Bank, Amerigroup and the Gleaning Network.
