Items Goodwill Can & Cannot Accept

Goodwill of Greater Washington gladly accepts the following…
(Please note: The following list is not all-inclusive)

  • Men’s, women’s, children’s, and infant’s clothing and outerwear that are clean and free of tears, stains, pet hairs, and odors; vintage through new items w/tags are welcom
  • Accessories in good condition, including the following:
    • Shoes, belts, handbags, and briefcases
    • Hats, gloves, scarves, and ties
    • Jewelry
  • Clean and stain-free linens and textiles, including the following:
    • Bedspreads, blankets, sheets, and towels
    • Curtains and draperies
    • Area and throw rugs
    • Decorative and throw pillows not used for sleeping
  • Housewares in good and working condition, including the following:
    • Dishes, glassware, and silverware
    • Cookware including pots, pans, lids, and utensils
    • Baskets, tins, Rubbermaid®, Tupperware®, and other storage containers
    • Pictures, frames, and decorative knick-knacks
    • Office and school supplies; general-use tools (no large machines)
    • Medical aids such as walkers, shower seats, wheelchairs
  • Electronics in working condition and with ALL parts, including cords:
    • Televisions, radios, stereo systems, mp3 players, VCRs, and DVD players
    • Small appliances such as toaster ovens, Foreman Grills®, coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, and portable air conditioners
    • Lamps and fans that are CPSC approved (visit www.cpsc.gov for more info)
    • Lawn equipment (all fuel must be removed prior to donating)
  • Art and Antiques
    • Mass produced items, signed pieces, and collectibles of any kind, including books, magazines, and comic books
  • Furniture that is clean and in sellable condition
    • Sofas, loveseats, chairs (La-Z-Boy®,desk, kitchen, etc.), ottomans, coffee tables, side tables, dining sets, china cabinets, credenzas, bookshelves, desks, etc.
  • Computers
    • PCs – desktops or laptops with Pentium III or later (newer than 2003)
    • Macs – iMacs, Powerbooks or newer
    • Printers, scanners, 4-in-Ones, and zip drives in fully operating condition with cords
    • Software programs less than two years old
    • Gaming systems (Nintendo, Sega, etc.)
  • Books and Records
    • Vinyl records, cassette tapes (including books on tape), CDs, and video games
    • Hardback and paperback books, excluding textbooks and encyclopedias
    • DVDs and VHS movies
  • Sport and Exercise Equipment
    • Bicycles, golf clubs, tennis racquets
    • Treadmills, stationary bikes, ab rollers, free weights
  • Toys/Kids – ALL items must be CPSC approved
    • Dolls, stuffed animals, toys for baby through teen, and sealed games and puzzles
    • Baby equipment such as cribs, strollers, and car seats

Goodwill of Greater Washington cannot accept the following…

  • Excessively large/bulky items such as swing sets, swimming pools, unbound carpeting, etc.
  • Large Appliances
    • Stoves, washing/drying machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, trash compactors, hot water heaters
  • Used Mattresses and Box Springs, Bed Pillows
  • Building and Plumbing Materials
    • Windows, doors, garage doors, shutters, sinks, tubs, toilets, fixtures, fencing, gutters, lumber, concrete, bricks, stone, and paint
    • Window blinds with cords
  • Newspapers, Magazines, Textbooks, and Encyclopedias
  • Anything of a pornographic nature
  • Furniture that is broken, worn, torn, stained, or missing parts; bean bag chairs and sleeper sofas are also not accepted
  • Donations of large quantities of furniture are potentially acceptable, but please check with the production manager before bringing them to the donation site
  • Baby Furniture, toys, and games that do not comply with CPSC safety standards
  • Any unsealed games or puzzles
  • Computers manufactured in 2002 or earlier
  • Software older than 2 years
  • Auto Parts
    • Tires, wheels, batteries, etc.
    • Any type of chemicals (oil, wiper fluid, etc.)
  • Firearms and Fireworks
  • Food and Beverage
  • Cosmetics and Hair Care Products
  • Any type of trash or hazardous materials
  • Items that are wet, mildewed, rusty, flammable, or in any way dangerous
  • Items that do not comply with Consumer Product Safety Standards (1-800-638-2772 or www.cpsc.gov)
